Division in the Spotlight: UAS Division

Division in the Spotlight: UAS Division
We are proud to recognize the amazing contributions and achievements of our teammates through our #DivisionintheSpotlight initiative. Each month, we aim to highlight one division within Airbus U.S. Space & Defense.
Meet the UAS Division
The UAS Division constantly pushes the bounds of technological innovations, ranging from their work on Zephyr to flight testing payloads with partners.
The division is geographically diverse, with team members located in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Colorado, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. Led by Bradley Mandala, Director of UAS Programs, the division comprises 15 employees.
Here are four takeaways from our conversation with Bradley Mandala and his team.

1. What is the primary mission of your division?
Our division is dedicated to advancing innovative technologies developed both in-house and in collaboration with our affiliates for delivery to the U.S. Department of Defense. Our technologies encompass systems such as Zephyr and Flexrotor, and our high-altitude payloads are currently undergoing flight testing on balloons over the Pacific.
2. What are some key projects your division is working on?
Our division is actively engaged in several key projects. We are currently conducting Zephyr’s second flight of the year to provide proof-of-concept support. Additionally, we are integrating an Electronic Sensing (ES) targeting payload in preparation for a flight later this year and conducting high-altitude balloon testing to test Zephyr-specific payloads in the stratosphere.
We are also executing the Flexrotor OCULUS Prime contract, which will support Space Dynamic Laboratories and the U.S. Navy.

3. What makes your division unique?
Our organization is built on a foundation of trust and transparency. Whenever possible, we prioritize internal promotions and strongly emphasize the professional development of our personnel.
Additionally, our hiring process incorporates a distinctive vetting method designed to eliminate subjectivity in assessments, centering on the principle of “Zephyriness.” This approach fosters exceptional team cohesion and a level of collaboration I have rarely seen elsewhere.
4. What makes you proud of your division?
I’m proud of our division’s perseverance, ingenuity, and tenacity. While believing in a product is essential, our greatest strength lies in our unwavering commitment to delivering the solutions our warfighters need to succeed in their missions.
Our recent successes and milestones include securing our first Flexrotor contract award for the U.S. Department of Defense and demonstrating the global operational capability of Zephyr through a C2 node operating in Huntsville, AL.
5. What’s the team most excited about for the future?
With our affiliate Aalto, we have successfully conducted two Zephyr flights this year, which are still airborne flying around the Horn of Africa. We are looking forward to more flights throughout the year.
We are most excited for a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) flight later this year. Our goal for the DoD flight is to integrate our full package to demonstrate our system’s ability to fill an urgent capability gap in INDOPACOM.
