ARROW Small Satellite Platform for LEO Constellations

The ARROW satellite bus is Airbus’ answer to an innovative, responsive, versatile and affordable platform for high-performance space applications. The ARROW satellite platform can serve many missions, including high data-rate low latency communications, collection and tracking of radio frequency sensing data, Earth observation with a high revisit, machine to machine communications, internet of things research, as well as in-orbit technology demonstration missions. Arrow is a commoditized space vehicle, utilizing a design-for-manufacturing approach originated for the OneWeb commercial satellite constellation, and produced in an assembly line process to take advantage of economies of scale. Airbus’ approach is sought by both commercial and government customers, particularly for proliferated LEO constellations contemplated by the U.S. government.

Blackjack Program at DARPA

With the growing threat to National Security Space capabilities from China and Russia, DARPA initiated the Blackjack program to diversify critical space capabilities by proliferating assets in small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. The concept is to leverage the billions of dollars commercial companies have been investing in LEO programs for the benefit of the U.S. Government. Airbus U.S. Space & Defense, Inc. is one of the prime contractors currently performing on the DARPA Blackjack Phase 1 bridge contract to manufacture 100+ satellites.
