On this #WomenInEngineering Day we are highlighting Raymie Fotherby, an Associate Systems Engineer on the Arrow family of satellites. Raymie works with the Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC) team to “ensure requirements flow down for all their hardware on the various satellite lines as well as supporting internal GNC software development.”
Raymie started off her career as a intern for Airbus U.S. in the summer of 2021 within the Business Development group. “As an Aerospace Engineering major, this was a very unique and valuable experience that helped me learn how aerospace companies engage in new business,” she said. Raymie joined the team as a full-time employee after graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2022.
The most challenging part of her current work is the number of moving parts she coordinates with customers and affiliate companies to ensure all requirements are met and the most rewarding part is the ability to work with senior level engineers daily. “The proximity to very talented engineers who have been working with satellites for decades is such a cool experience that I wouldn’t get at a huge aerospace company, ” Raymie said.
In the future, Raymie hopes to start her Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering to learn more about GNC and Satellite Systems since she enjoys working in those areas. “Another long-term goal of mine is to learn more about Space Policy and maybe eventually earn an advanced degree in that as well. So lots of learning, and applying that to real-world satellite issues,” she said.
